One of the hardest parts of Halloween for my little guys is waiting until it's dark to get started with the neighborhood trick or treating.
And it seems like we are ALWAYS rushing to get them something to eat before we go out!
So, this year, I thought it would be really fun to have a late afternoon/early evening Halloween playdate party for some of their friends. That way they can have their tummies full with great #spookysnacks before they get ready for all that trick or treating!
Halloween is on a Friday this year, and my big guy doesn't get off the school bus until 4:30.
So how awesome would it be if he had a party waiting on him right when he got off the bus with some fun Halloween snacks?

All you need a is a few simple ingredients from your local Wal-Mart to make this Halloween playdate super creative and fun!

First, start with some Halloween Oreos. I mean, they are a Halloween party must! Right now, all these products are on special displays at Wal-Mart!

Then, pick up some Wheat Thins,  Fanta (hello? Orange drinks!), and Dasani bottled water.
Just watch what we are going to make with all these products!

First, let's make some spooky Halloween Oreo trees for our table!
Here's what you will need:

2 Styrofoam cones (it is very important that you do not take the plastic off of them, to avoid the styrofoam particles getting in the Oreos)
2-3 packages of Halloween Oreos
Decorator Icing
A piping bag
Food coloring (optional)

The first step is totally optional, but I colored my decorator icing with some red and yellow food coloring to make an orange icing to match the inside of the Oreos.
If you are using regular Oreos, you can skip this step.

Next, pipe some of your icing onto the tree and smooth it down with a butter knife or an offset spatula. It doesn't need to be perfect at all, just make sure you cover all of the cone.
Next, pipe a little bit of icing on one side of the Oreo and then stick it to the cone.

Keep repeating this step until you have the entire cone covered.
Finish with some chocolate candies or candy corn.
I topped mine with cute little felt witch hats.

Next, let's make an awesome and yummy pumpkin cheese ball for the kids to snack on with their Wheat Thins.
This is a SUPER easy recipe that I have been making for years. There is no actual pumpkin in the recipe, it's just a really cute shape!

  • Ingredients:
  • (8-ounce) blocks extra-sharp Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • (8-ounce) container chive-and-onion cream cheese
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground red pepper
  • broccoli stalk
  • Red and green apple wedges

  • Combine Cheddar cheese and next 4 ingredients in a bowl until blended.
  • Shape mixture into a ball to resemble a pumpkin.
  • Cut the stem of a bunch of broccoli to resemble a pumpkin stem.
  • You can make this ahead and store it in the fridge for up to two days.
  • Serve with Wheat Thins.

Next, let's put our table together for our hungry trick or treaters!

I started by hanging this lime green fabric on a wall in my home. Then, I hung these witches hats from the ceiling using clear craft lacing, to give the appearance of them floating over the table.

I used a piece of furniture that I already had in my breakfast room to create a very wicked Witches' Kitchen. I draped purple spiderweb fabric over the side and added some cute Halloween decorations to the table. Remember, giving a party display some height is really key in making it look polished and giving it visual interest.
I put the punch dispenser down low so that the kids could serve themselves.

I displayed my pumpkin cheese balls in the middle of the table within kid reach, on a really cool spiderweb cake plate

The cupcakes were also from the bakery at Wal-mart and they were the perfect little bite-size for kids. They are not too much and easy for little hands to hold and eat!

I added my Oreo trees to the side of the table, for the kids to reach up and get their own Oreos.
A little disclaimer here--you need to make these Oreo trees right before the party, to make sure that the cookies don't get stale! (Not that any kid ever cared!)

I love all the decorations on the Halloween Oreos!

I made a fun punch with the Orange Fanta too! It could NOT be easier!
Orange Fanta, Pineapple Juice, and Orange Sherbet. The kids loved it and my little one kept asking for more!

And for the little ones who really want to hydrate before their big night of trick-or-treating, there was also Dasani water!

Looks like they are enjoying themselves, right?

Another really fun way to use the Dasani bottles is to make them into fun luminaries for your front walk! After the party is over and the sun goes down, you can set them out to line your front walk to welcome the neighborhood to your door!

I made these using some vinyl and my die-cut machine, but you could easily just use some tape or stickers! I painted over everything with orange spray paint. When the paint is dry, simply pull off the vinyl and you've got a DIY luminary!
Make sure you use battery operated tea lights, so that the heat doesn't melt the bottle.

We had our next door neighbor girls, who have the prettiest costumes, come over and help us put out our luminaries right before it got dark and share our Oreos! Miss I put a magical Halloween spell on the Oreos for us!
