Memphis! Home of The World Championship BBQ Cooking Contest. I have lived in a suburb of Memphis for over 20 years, so I consider myself a Memphian at this point.
And we Memphians are passionate about our BBQ! And by BBQ, I don't mean something you put on your grill outside. I mean, smoked meat!
We will put BBQ sauce and pulled, smoked meat on pretty much anything in this area of the world, including, but not limited to nachos, pizza, and spaghetti! There is a special story about Memphis very own King's love for BBQ pizza here in Memphis. He would often get them as takeout, to eat back at his famous Memphis home.
Heinz has just introduced their new regionally inspired BBQ sauces, with the help of pit-masters around the country. They are proud to bring you sauces that represent all BBQ regions of the country! And lucky for me, one of them is from Memphis! Dan Brown, of Leonard's Pit Barbecue worked with Heinz to develop this sauce to represent the BBQ capital of Memphis, Tennessee! I couldn't wait to try it. The best part is that Heinz sauces are 100% natural, which means you can feel good about feeding them to your family.
I picked up the sampler pack of all the 4 Heinz Pitmaster Collection sauces including Kansas City Sweet and Smoky, Texas Bold and Spicy, and Carolina Vinegar Style Tangy. You could modify this recipe to include any of those sauces, or you can use the Classic Sweet and Thick flavor too! Which cue are you?
When I was in college, I worked at a restaurant that made a version of BBQ pizza with BBQ chicken. It was SO delicious. I make a version of it all the time at home. It's an easy 6 ingredient recipe that is perfect for al fresco dining in the summer and your family is guaranteed to love!
Here's what you are going to need:
Heinz BBQ Memphis Sweet and Spicy (16oz)
Pre-made pizza crust (or you can make your own).
1 c. diced red onion
1 cup chopped rotisserie chicken breast
1 lb mozzarella or Italian style shredded cheese
1 handful chopped cilantro (more to taste)
Pour Heinz BBQ Memphis Sweet and Spicy all over the pre-made pizza crust until it reaches up the edges (it will spread as it cooks).
Top with mozzarella, chopped chicken, red onion and small amount of the cilantro.
Cook for 10 minutes at 450 degrees.
Let rest for 5 minutes and add the fresh cilantro to the top.
I love how the BBQ sauce carmelizes on the crust! It makes the pizza SO delicious!
