{My Parties} Air Force Retirement Party

It's the perfect time of year to share this fun, patriotic retirement party!
The honoree for this party is an Air Force pilot who was retiring from service after 20 years of service. The weather for this party was ceiling and visibility unlimited! It was held on Memorial Day weekend, which is the perfect time to celebrate Lt. Col Wells on his years of service to our country.

The invitations and printables were designed by Hometown Design Co. I love how they turned out!

We decorated inside and outside for the guests. The hosts' lovely home has the perfect area for outside entertaining on this lovely arbor-covered patio. I wanted to use the arbor for hanging decor, so we hung a variety of red, white, and blue lanterns from the top. Then, using a patriotic roll of tablecloth from Hobby Lobby, I created a DIY bunting and draping by simply using a push pin to secure the cloth right into the wood of the arbor.

Outside, I did 5 48" round tables and alternated red and blue cloths. On each, I put a runner of the opposite color that I picked up at Hobby Lobby 40% off at from their July 4th stock.
Simple white chairs were the perfect seating option.

For each centerpiece, we went with a simply DIY of grocery store flowers, which my mother-in-law arranged for me, in clear containers. Each one had photos of Lt. Col Well's career inserted into the arrangements with paper straws.

We kept our main dessert table indoors, due to the Memphis heat. Since we had an all-buttercream cake, it was better safe than sorry.
I wanted a big "wow" moment when guests walked in though, so I did a big patriotic balloon installation over the table.

Our dessert table was filled with custom sugar cookies by Sugaroo Sweets, churro shots by Simply Delicious Catering (the savory food was a taco bar), and a beautiful buttercream cake by Mad Lily Cakery.

These cookies were so beautiful. The client requested that there was a Lt. Colonel insignia and Sugaroo Sweets nailed it. I also loved the airbrushing behind the plane, which matched the invitations.

The gorgeous cake by Mad Lily Cakery was the centerpiece. I added his f-16 in the form of a toy airplane on the top. We had to get that in there!

The background is a patriotic fabric that I found at Joann. It's an abstract star pattern. Over that, I hung a simple banner with his call sign.

I do what to know what he did to get the Durden call sign. It's especially interesting knowing that you don't pick your call sign, it's picked for you!
There were more banners on the fireplace as well.

For our favor area, we kept it simple but fun by doing these customized tumblers for the guests. I added all his squadrons onto the cups. This is something that the guests can use every day around the house! I know we drink out of these kind of cups all the time.

Congratulations Lt. Col Wells!
